My Blog Name http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php My blog description en-us Fish Up High http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=25 The fishing in Frankfort remains excellent. The north and east winds have moved the temperature break up to 20 feet. We got fish on the riggers early this morning down 25, 40 and 55 and the wire divers were good out 75 and 100. Later in the day it was mostly a lead core and copper bite. The five colors were the best with plugs. One had a pearl Tomic and the other had a bloody nose Silver Horde, both in the smaller size. The Happy Gnome from Silver Streak was good on the 200 and 250 copper. Lots of good catches this morning from the Herring Hole all the way to north of the lighthouse. Did not hear of anyone fishing Platte Bay this morning, but it wont be long and hopefully the Coho show up. Looks like great weather for the weekend, get out there and get some!

Good to Great http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=24 Fishing out of Frankfort has been good to great at times. Catches over the past ten days have ranged from eight to eighteen fish per trip. Most of the catch has been mature kings, but we have also been getting a few Lake Trout, some Steelhead and a few smaller kings. It has still been largely a spoon bite, although some of the bigger fish are coming on Flasher/Fly combos and we did have our first fish on a plug this week. A great spoon this week was the Modified Caramel Dolphin Super Slim from Dreamweaver. That was taking fish up high on a 100 and 150 copper. We are still running the Chilly Goose (or Happy Gnome) on our 200 and 250 and the Lucky Charlie on 300 and 350. When we had them out, the 400 and 450 had the Black Screwball, although temp was up pretty high this week and we rarely put them in the water. The corner riggers had spoons with free sliders down 35 to 55 feet and we had a big green e-chip with a Ken's Aqua Gold down the chute. The wire divers out 100 to 150 have been good but the high divers have been struggling to put fish in the box. We have changed baits and depths but can't seem to get them going. One buddy has done well on Slide Divers with spoons up high, something you may want to try. Good luck and be safe out there.

Huge Salmon http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=23 Last night we caught a King that tipped the scales at 27.25 pounds. Biggest fish that we have seen in years. For a picture, check out Hammerhead Charters on Facebook. I will post a full report as soon as I have a morning off. Fishing has been good in 100 to 150 FOW on mostly spoons. Plugs and flies are still a little slow. Temp is moving up and down, so watch your probe. This morning it was 55-60 down. Good spoons were Happy Gnome from Silver Streak, Lucky Charlie from Pro King, Happy Meal from Moonshine and Hello Darling from Dreamweaver. Good luck and be safe!

Return of the Kings http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=22 We have had several good trips in a row now, so I can safely say that the kings are back! We have been fishing as far south as the Herring Hole and as far north as Six Mile Hole and several spots in between. Tonight we had the heaviest box of the year with several fish over 15 pounds, the biggest was 18. He came on a 400 copper with a Black Screwball from Silver Streak. The same old baits have been working, so we have not changed much. Chilly Gooses up high, Lucky Charlie on the 300 and 350, and Black Screwball deep. The best flasher/fly combo has been Lester's Molester behind a White E-chip and a Wonderbread Spin Doctor pulling an Aqua gold fly. Riggers tonight were hitting at 44, 55 and 66. Wire divers were out 125 and high divers were at 200. The fishing has been excellent and the weather has been perfect. Calm seas and sunshine, and when the weather is hot there is no place better to be than out on the lake. See ya out there, Hammerhead.

Slow But Steady http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=21 Fishing is not red hot right now in Frankfort, but it is steady. We have been fishing for kings for the first couple hours in the mornings and then switching to Lake Trout to round out the catch. As a bonus there are some really nice Steelhead in the area as well. All the fish are well fed this year on the bumper crop of Alewives and Kings up to 29 pounds have been caught out of Frankfort. Last night the boat next to me landed a 24 pound king on Cowbells and a Spin n Glow. Go figure. Good baits have been Chilly Goose Silver Streak, Hello Darlin Dreamweaver and Charlies Special Pro King. White E-Chip with a Lesters Molester continues to land the big fish on a wire diver. Temp has been as deep as 90 feet and as high as 45 so check it with the probe or ask on the radio (channel 10) if you don't use one. Good luck, Capt. John

Slow But Steady http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=20 Nice mixed bag catch this morning! We had some really big kings, including a twenty pounder and one that went eighteen and a half along with some nice Lake Trout and Steelhead. The Lakers were up off the bottom and the Steelies were right on the surface. Riggers were good at 49, 69 and 89 with Moonshines early and then switching to Silver Streaks in Blue Sugar and Chilly Goose. Copper continues to help fill the box later in the day. We took fish on a 150, 250, 300, 400 and 450. A small Dreamweaver spoon in "Hey Baby" pattern and a Pro King in "Lucky Charlie" were the best baits on copper. I still cannot get a good bite going on the divers. We moved them around and changed baits but only managed one Laker on a wire diver out 150 at 1.5. When I figure out a good flasher/fly pattern I will keep you posted. Until then, have fun on the water.

Deep Water http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=19 Fishing in Frankfort is a little tough right now, but we did manage to get some really nice kings and one big Steelhead this morning. All that South wind blew in a lot of warm water, and the probe was still reading 59 degrees down 100 feet. We found some good temperature breaks out over 500 feet of water and just weaved in and out of the scumlines. Lots of dead Alewives on the surface marked where the fish were lurking and we picked away at them all morning long. Black Screwball and Blue Chilly from Silver Streak were both good and Hey Baby from Dreamweaver put several fish in the box, including the biggest king of the day, an 18.5 pounder on a free slider. The Screwball was on a 400 and a 450 copper and accounted for four kings. The Blue Chilly was down 120 on a rigger and took a couple. We moved the divers up and down through the water column and never had a bite. The fish are not here in big numbers yet, but should show up any day. The weather however, is perfect, and there is no better place to be than out on the lake, catching a sunset and a few fish with your friends and family. See ya on the water, Capt. John

Hola, Papa Grande! http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=18 Nice mixed-bag catch last night. We started with a pass north on the bank in 80 feet of water, targeting lake trout. The lakers were a little finicky, but we managed four fish before we made the turn back south, and switched gears to fish for salmon. It took us a while, but we finally dialed in to the salmon. They were off the bank in about 130 feet of water, and they were smackin flies on divers. We were testing a new fly designed by a buddy of mine that used to fish out of Frankfort. He calls the fly something different, but since his name is Lester, we dubbed the new prototype "Lester's Molester!" We started it up high on the Power-Pro diver, but after washing it for a half hour at 150 on the counter, Rhino dropped it to 200. About thirty seconds later the diver started screaming out line. Ten minutes later a fifteen pounder hit the deck. Ryan reset the diver at 200 and it rode for not more than a minute when another mature king smoked it. Two mature kings in fifteen minutes for the inaugural run of Lester's Molester. Not bad. The wire divers took fish at 150 on a 1 1/2 setting and the high divers produced fish at 200 on a 3 setting. Spoons on the corner riggers took fish at 49 and 69 and the center rigger was at 75 with a Wonderbread Spin Doctor and an Aqua Gold fly. Copper took the smaller fish. There are quite a few immature salmon (Shakers) in the area, so check your gear often. Dragging a small fish can screw up your presentation. Not to mention, you're not going to catch a big one, if you're pulling a little one. The biggest fish of the night went nearly twenty pounds! It's good to see fish that big in June. The fishing is good right now and the forecasted south-west winds should only help.

Cool Weather, Hot Fishing! http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=17 We didn't know what to expect for our Thursday morning trip this week. The wind had shifted overnight from due South to due North and the temperature had dropped twenty degrees. We motored out to the bank, hoping that the fish were still where we had left them, after the shift in the weather. We set up in 130 feet of water heading north and dropped the center rigger to 79'. Thirty seconds later, before I could set the corner rigger, we had our first fish. The fishing was fast and furious on our first pass. We fished three riggers and two wire divers and we had a hard time keeping those in the water. After we made the turn to head south, we were able to get a couple of copper lines in the water and put a few more fish in the box. By this time it was 8 a.m. and we had 17 fish in the box!! The clients decided that they had plenty of fish and a warm breakfast and a hot cup of coffee sounded pretty good, so we pulled the gear and headed for the dock. The Wonderbread Spin Doctor pulling an Aqua Gold glow fly did the most damage on the center rigger down 79'. The corner riggers also took fish with Moonshine spoons, Happy Meal and Wonderbread. The wire divers tallied a couple of fish apiece with a Blue Dolphin Spin Doctor pulling an Aqua Gold on one side and a UV white Spin Doctor pulling a UV Silver Horde fly on the other side.

Kings!!! http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=16 After an unseasonably cool spring, the summer weather finally arrived. With the warm weather, came about a million alewives and the kings were not far behind. We ended up with fourteen fish last night, one lake trout and the rest were chinooks. The surface temp was 54 degrees and the fish were scattered from 39 feet down to 139 feet down. Riggers, divers and copper all took fish. It was mostly a spoon bite, but the bigger fish came on flashers and flies. The center rigger deep with a Wonderbread Spin Doctor pulling an Aqua Gold fly was the best. The biggest fish, a 17 1/2 pound king, took a Blue Dolphin Spin Doctor pulling a Silver Horde fly on a wire diver. The spoon bite was all over the board. Magnums, super slims, standards, blues, greens, Silver Streaks, Pro Kings, and Stingers.... it did not seem to matter. All of the copper rods took at least one rip, 150 feet to 500 feet of copper. The weather was as good as the fishing. Flat calm and 72 degrees. It felt great to be on the water again. All in all, a great start to the summer!

Anticipation! http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=15 Starting to gear up for the 2011 fishing season! Can't wait to get the boat out and wax her up. Put some new line on the reels, put some new spoons and flies in the bag of tricks, and wait for the fish to show up. It won't be long before the salmon begin their migration north. I will keep you posted on sightings in southern ports, but lately the fish have been showing up in Frankfort in early June. Hope to see you on the water this year! Capt. John

2010 Ends With A Bang! http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=14 After a couple of slow weeks at the end of August and the beginning of September, the fish decided to return, and in big numbers. There was also a ton of baitfish around which bodes well for next season. As the water cooled, the trout and salmon were inhabiting the same waters and mixed bag catches were the norm for the end of the 2010 season. Lots of Steelhead and Lake Trout mixed in with salmon and even some Brown Trout thrown in. Plenty of two and three year old salmon means that we should see another great year of fishing next season!

Gales Of September http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=13 The wind continues to blow, and so does the fishing. We need a couple of days of mild winds and nice weather to set the fish up. Last September we had beautiful indian summer days. So far this year it feels like Seattle weather, cold, rainy and windy. It feels more like hunting weather than fishing weather. Hopefully next week the weather and fishing improve.

Little Slow http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=12 Fishing is a little slow right now in Franktown. We should be coming back to the docks with heavy coolers full of fish, but the Kings are not cooperating and the Coho have not shown up yet. Every day it seems like the wind blows from a different direction and stirs the fish up a little more. We need a consistent wind for a couple of days to set the fish up. Temp is up high ( twenty feet) and plugs on the riggers and short lead cores (2,4,6,8 colors) have been best. Green Easter Egg Silver Horde and Pearl with black dots have been working. The fishing will improve! Hang in there!

Windy! http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=11 If the wind ever stops blowing, we may be able to get out fishing again. We were able to sneak out Tuesday night in between gales and the fish were there and biting. They had not seen a spoon in two days because nobody has been out. Temp had come up quite a bit, we had 50 degree water, fifty feet down. Pretty much same program, mixed bag of spoons, plugs and flasher/fly combos. We tried a new Silver Horde plug, fish scale, UV looking thing, and it took two fish on a copper rig. Everything else was pretty consistent. Look for another report once the gales of August stop blowing.

Late Report http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=10 Finally have a chance to sit down and write a fishing report, we were a little busy last week. The fishing has been good all through August. They are moving around a little so we are having to look for them and adjust a little day to day. Last week we fished the Hole, the Bank, Six Mile and West Platte Bay. The boats that ran out to South Manitou hammered on the fish, huge boxes of thirty fish or more. We are still running a mixed bag of plugs, spoons and flasher/fly combos. We got to test drive a new Moonshine plug last week and it worked great. They are hard to find, but worth the money. In an earlier post I mentioned that we were catching fishing on the new style of Dreamweaver plugs that are shaped like an Ace-High. All of those plugs filled with water when we ran them deep on the riggers and are out of the rotation. I have gone back to my old favorites, Silver Hordes in Blue or Green Splatterback, Clown or Glow Pearl/ Black Ladderback. The Dreamweaver flasher in Blue Dolphin pulling an Aqua Gold Glow fly has been good on the chute rigger. And the UV Dreamweaver pulling a UV Silver Horde fly on the wire divers have been good. The Moonshine Wonderbread is good on the 400 and 450 copper and a Pro King Mag in Charlie's Special has been good on the 300 and 350 copper. It is blowing a gale right now, so tomorrow the fish will probably be somewhere else.

An Unexpected Catch http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=9 Fishing has been great up and down the coast off of Frankfort, from the Herring Hole all the way to Platte Bay. Everything is catching fish right now, spoons, plugs and flasher fly combos. The new Dreamweaver plugs in the glow patterns have been good in low light conditions on the riggers. The Moonshine spoons and Silver Streaks continue to produce on the copper rigs. Try a Wonderbread or Flounder Pounder in the Moonshine, or a Black Screwball or UV Panties in the Silver Streak. Rigger bites are coming from 75 down to 125, diver bites are coming from 150 to 225 on a 1.5 or 200 to 300 on a 3.0 setting. Good luck and see you on the water. Oh yeah, the "unexpected catch", an 8 1/2 pound Walleye. See if you can find it on the daily catch.

Big Fish http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=9 The fish are big and getting bigger by the week. We had a two fish on Monday that were knocking on the door of the twenty pound threshold. Wire divers and the center rigger continue to account for the bigger fish. The wire divers are set at 1.5 and out 175 to 225 with Spin Doctors and flies. Blue Dolphin spinnie with a blue Silver Horde fly has been good as well as the UV spinnie with a black UV Silver Horde fly. Spoons on the copper have been good. Wonderbread Moonshine on the 450 and 400 and Chilly Goose Silver Streak on the 300 and 350. Corner riggers have been hot and cold with a combination of plugs and spoons. Keep experimenting til you find something that works. We have been fishing the riggers from 85 to 125 down. It blew HARD out of the South last night, so temp is going to be deep again for awhile.

They Are Here! http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=8 The Big Boys have arrived in huge numbers and the fishing has been great all weekend. Temp is still pretty deep (80 to 90 feet) but we are marking and catching fish up high, out of temp. Plugs have really started to get hammered on recently, Silver Hordes in Clown, Ghost and Blue Splatterback have been good. Divers have been really good as well, a wire diver deep with a Spin Doctor and Fly and a Slide diver up high with a plug have both put their share of fish in the box. More info next week, gotta get the boat ready for another trip. See you on the water! Capt. John

Warm Water http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=7 The winds continue to blow from the south, and there is still no cold water to be found in Frankfort, but the fishing remains excellent. The big fish have moved in and the little fish have disappeared offshore somewhere. Flashers and flies accounted for the bulk of our catch last night, although spoons did take some fish and we caught our first fish on a plug. We ended up with sixteen Kings and four Lakers (one was oversized and had to go back). Wire divers dialed at 1.5 out 200 feet were good, as well as the high divers dialed at 3.0 and out 300 feet. Blue Dolphin Dreamweaver Flasher pulling a Silver Horde Blue Splatterback Fly and a White E-Chip pulling an Aqua Gold were both good. A 450 copper down the chute with a Moonshine Wonderbread produced all night as well. UV Silverstreaks in Panty Ho and Veggie patterns took fish as well. Christine at the Tackle Box carries all this stuff and can point you in the right direction if u can't find something. Riggers were at 110, 130 and 150. When fishing this deep, expect tangles, it just comes with the territory. Get the fish in the box, then relax, re-tie and re-set. You may want to run a few less lines and spread your boards out WIDE! There are fish all over, so no need to fish structure. Try to stay away from other boats and have fun, that's why you're out there. If fishing in a crowd stresses you out, don't do it. There is plenty of lake out there. See you on the water, Capt. John

Go Deep http://hammerheadcharters.net/blog.php?d=6 Last weekends strong southerly winds pushed the fish deep, really deep. Bust out the wire divers and Big Jon Brutes! Last week we had 40 degree water at 40 feet, last night the probe was reading 64 degree water at 95 feet! I thought we might catch a few bass down there, but no such luck. We did manage to get 7 nice kings and an over-sized lake trout. Considering the water conditions, I was pretty happy. One of the kings came on a 450 copper with a Chilly Goose Magnum. Two came on riggers at 90 feet with a UV Pink Panties Mag, and 120 on a white e-chip with an Aqua Gold fly. The other four kings came on wire mag divers, dialed at 1.5 out 200 feet with flashers and flies. We trolled out to 500 feet and back in to 200 feet of water at the end. Did not mark many fish or bait. Pray for some North wind!
